Admins
(Augur & Tiree)

Duties:
  • Maintain the website
  • Expand gaming opportunities for players
  • Approve new Rifts character submissions
  • Maintain high quality across the site, and accurate rules and information
Rewards:
  • Admins will be rated according to merit by all players twice a year.
  • Rating will be done by players on the following schedule:
    • January 1st
    • July 1st
  • Each is responsible for creating his rating poll on the above schedule & posting the results to the appropriate thread in the GM forum when the poll is over.
  • Players are responsible for rating the Admins within a week of the poll being posted, and posting notice that they have voted (in the same thread.)
  • Ratings will be conducted via poll and averaged to the nearest whole number.
Admin Rating Reward Table
  • 10-9: Irreplaceable Admin: You have earned 7 EP.
8-7: Excellent Admin: You have earned 6 EP.
6-5: Effective Admin: You have earned 5 EP.
4-3: Good Admin: You have earned 4 EP.
2-1: Lazy Admin: You have earned only 3 EP.

There are several reasons why I've decided to give the admins a low score for this poll, and I feel that it would be constructive to lay them:
1) While I appreciate the hard work that went into fixing the dice roller when it crashed, it showed that the site is not prepared for a massive system failure. We can't predict when or why the next crash will happen, but the site doesn't have a dedicated group of people ready to confront any future issues.

2) An important part of maintaining the site should be ensuring that we have enough GM's to handle all the games being played. In reality, we're facing a GM shortage, and a more concerted effort needs to be made to recruit people to help run games. Clearly whatever is being done to recruit GM's isn't working and the admins should take some serious time to consider new strategies to incentivize players to take up more GM/AGM responsibilities or branch out their recruiting strategies.

3) The admins don't offer anything that enhances the PbP experience. I enjoy the games I'm a part of and the camaraderie I have with fellow players, but EU doesn't offer much beyond that. EP contests that are supposed to encourage people to interact with people in other games and dimensions are not well promoted and don't get many submissions. I want to be excited about the NaNoWriMo, especially in years when I can't enter a submission, but it never gets more than four entries. This year, one of the three stories was an already written campaign intro from someone who doesn't play on the site. I'm not saying I have a solution for making EP contests more popular, but the ones that have been put up in recent years were half-hearted. I

4) I actually think it's really disingenuous to give any EP for lowest ratings possible. While a lot of work goes into managing the site, this poll appears to be designed to give the admins rewards for the quality of their work. Doing the absolute bare minimum or substandard work doesn't deserve a reward.

In a way, I do agree and disagree with the above.

I don’t deserve any EP for being an Admin this last year. I have been away, and kept an eye out on the site for any major issues. Letting it run/be, while it was.

So if the low votes are on my behalf, please reevaluate accordingly. All the EP from this poll should go to the other Admin

But - with my new lower number of hours at work. I will start being on site more, and that includes the community hangout/chat as well

1) I entirely agree, though the analysis is incorrect. I have limited knowledge as regards the IT back-end, but handle all the routine stuff that admins have to do which GMs can't. The only possible "future issues" are entirely IT related. Tiree is the go-to guy for IT stuff. That he's the ONLY PERSON is, I agree, unacceptable, and he holds some keys even I don't have--again, not what's wanted--but communication is difficult when your go-to guy is working 80 hours/week or whatever and is basically incommunicado.

2) GM shortage has always been a thing. This is nothing new. Recruiting new players (and GMs) isn't the sole responsibility of admins--that's not even on our list of responsibilities. I have solicited for GMs to send me a blurb to promote their games online and gotten NOTHING in response. Myth & Jest is a new GM I recruited--he's running the brand new Chaos Earth campaign. But again, this isn't "my job," this is on everyone who wants the PBP community to grow. Don't spend much time online? Won't use other platforms? Don't tell your tabletop friends about the community? These are ways to not find new players/GMs. Also, "PBP" via Discord chat is enormously popular [though inferior to forum-based games IMO], and would be a cool gateway to our style of PBP, but I see no one giving that a shot either.

3) "Enhancing the experience" isn't one of our duties either. But to put a fine point on things, I promoted the hell out of the contest. I mass messaged every player on site. I mentioned/linked it Hangouts and Discord multiple times. Made the contest a GLOBAL thread so everyone could see it at all times...and virtually no one participated. Frankly, this one is on the community. I did everything that could reasonably be expected to promote the contest...and that's still not one of our duties.

4) Your disagreeing with the premise of the poll doesn't make the poll disingenuous.
What does it mean if someone is disingenuous?
(of a person or their behavior) slightly dishonest, or not speaking the complete truth: It was disingenuous of her to claim she had no financial interest in the case. Opposite. ingenuous formal.
There's no deceit happening here, you just disagree with the premise. Honest disagreement is one thing, deception is quite another.

In the future, at least judge us by the standards we're actually supposed to be held to. They are, in fact, posted:

Duties:
  • Maintain the website--2 week turn-around wasn't ideal, but not shabby
  • Expand gaming opportunities for players--Chaos Earth & ATB are new opportunities
  • Approve new Rifts character submissions--not many of late
  • Maintain high quality across the site, and accurate rules and information--I've a few recent items in the backlog, but have done so
