All MOD's Cons

What came first - the music or the powers? Did I listen to music because it is the source of my powers? Or did I get my powers because I listened to music? It's hard to say. Sure, being inside an amplifier during a My Bloody Quinceniera concert will change the way one sees music. But that's not the type of thing to give one super powers.

Most phantoms are fascinated by light and can amuse themselves by turning into varying patterns of shiny things. I was more interested sounds. I preferred to be a ghost, invisibly floating between a series of satellites and robot operated maintenance ships. Alone, I could listen to the erratic hum of solar winds, the harsh regular thumping of pulsars, the ever louder and then fading creaks of passing comets. One time, I swear that I even heard the Cosmic Forge, a singular sound that felt like the totality of everything and reverberated through every particle in my being. I was content. And whenever I got bored of my location, I'd stowaway on a new ship and find a new part of the galaxy to chill in.

This is how I spent the first 20 - 30 years of my life, it's hard to say exactly how long. But that changed with the first time I heard music. I stumbled onto a Naruni drone cruiser that I thought was unmanned. I settled into a cozy corner in engineering and listened to regular buzzes of robots communicating with each other. A ship full of bots operating together sounds like a perfectly tuned clock; but mixed within that chatter I heard corporeals. I was ready to hop on the first drone it launched but then I heard something new.

Listen, the sounds of space are regular, predictable, and follow the laws of physics; but combined together it is a whole lot of noise that needs to be untangled. There's something gratifying in spotting the distant slow churn of a black hole from all the other cosmic phenomena one can hear. This was different. The sounds were erratic, chaotic, but deliberate. Someone was taking the chaos of random sounds and creating order. It was beautiful.

I was entranced, so I followed the noise to its source and found myself hovering over a bored radio operator broadcasting his music throughout the ship. He had no idea that he would find a fan, but there I was, humming along and putting on a light show. The amateur DJ, went by the name of Cocteau, was surprised at first, but amused he put on another song, and watched me start to react to the hums and beats on the track. There was something about the music that moved me, had me turning into a sparkling pattern of different colors. It was liberating in a way that even the most serene sounds of space could never be.

After a while, Cocteau grew tired, but I wanted more music. So he taught me how to operate a computer - play audio files, browse his library, adjust speaker settings, and read the track listings to find my new favorites. The next morning he taught me about different genres, legendary artists, the components of the perfect three minute pop song, and everything I needed to be a discerning fan of music. Then, when I refused to leave the computer eight straight days, he taught me about the corporeal concept of "personal belongings" - touching on topics such as money, where to buy "my own" holographic personal computer, and why bootlegging concerts is not a crime. He even said he could find me a job at the Naruni space station we were docking in.

As a test subject. Cocteau had a brother named Thompson who worked on energy containment fields for R&D for the Naruni. He made me an offer - he but me in a cell with a containment field, but there was also a sweet sound system. Thompson would test what kinds of fields I could pass through and what I couldn't; if I performed satisfactorily he would let me keep the sound system when they released me. It sounded like a fair offer.

Life as a lab rat was about as exciting as one could expect. At least, Thompson gave me an audio library with over 250,000 tracks and a light interface so I could play music in my energy form. Except that the sound system was on the opposite side of the the containment field. Thompson changed its power level and frequency. I could go through the field when he wanted, I couldn't when he didn't.

Then one day I stumbled on the perfect song. It was like hearing the sound of the Cosmic Forge again. A universal hum resonated through every particle of my being; I don't have a physical body but I understood when Carly Slay crooned about warm blood underneath her skin and her heart pumping. So I flew across the room to put up the volume. Apparently that was a big deal, because the energy field was at max power on a very specific frequency. Based on everything that had happened so far, I should have bounced off the field not glitched through.

A bunch of smythers burst into my room and ran some tests. They talked about something something a perfect junction of energy patterns, and something something unique response to sonic feedback. It sounded boring and technical, so I tuned them out and played the next song. Over the next few days, Thompson grew incredibly despondent and decided to cut me loose abruptly. His executive overseer said that because I had "proven to be a statistical anomaly that produced no relevant data" they were keeping the speaker system.

I buggered off in search of new tunes - some good, some bad, some life changing, some sad. If there was something new to listen to, I was there. I followed the Endless Dead for a few years, watched the Three Iggys break-up concert, I even got to meet Carly Slay. (She's just as totes adorbs in person as she is in her virtual concerts). Occasionally I would work as the light show for a club.

One night, I was doing the lights for ratanoid DJ. It might have been the most turgid and boring set I had ever listened to, so I started to hum along a couple of bars of a Bry-10E tune. Then I thought about its funky baseline, and the clapping percussion, and the next thing I know, I'm playing the synth section myself. I was reproducing music, creating all these different sounds; plus I was a serious improvement on c0rps3f3rr3t. Phantoms are known for known being able to manipulate light, but here I was doing the same thing to sound. It was poetic, I had spent my whole life absorbing it like light, they both nourished me, so naturally I could work with them. I had spent my whole life an alien to my own species, and I had found the root of it all.

I felt the need to explore these and so I started exploring stereos. Literally. I worked my way into amplifiers, woofers, giant speaker towers. I watched the way that their wires carried electrical signals and translated them into different noises. I looked for ways to connect to them an amplify my own abilities (no luck, yet). In fact, I was inside a Mordivex Oscillation Duo (M.O.D.) speaker when I met Nev. He had bought it as part of a new comms system for his ship. He didn't realize this until I decided to change his alarm clock. After he stopped shouting death threats, we struck an agreement. While Dr. Nevyn McLaren is a scientist, he isn't particularly interested in acoustics. He can't help me figure out what are the limits of my sonic powers. But he is giving me a space on his ship to put up some speakers, play my music and figure things out. All I have to do is help him "procure funds".

I think it's going to work out. He doesn't have terrible taste in music, and he's teaching me pirate shanties.

    That depends on the corporeal. If they are a kindred spirit with good taste in music, they will appreciate MOD for what ey are; if not ey are a pain in the ass.
