We were a simple minor land-owning human house, we hosted the occasional dignitary or other respectable groups, but we were never the ones invited. Our keep was well built just outside the skirts of Llorn, facing the sea, it is strong and able to withstand brutal punishment… father always said it was constructed during the Great Elf-Dwarf War or before, though we never knew for sure. Being a minor house, nothing much was ever expected of us so we had all the time in the world to focus on other things. We stayed away from the politics of the Eastern Civilizations unless specifically called upon by one of the Dukes, which was impressively rare.

My sister, Taria, had a fascination with the dead and the demons, studying them. Her collection was impressive and she knew more about those monsters than anyone I knew who lived, she’d been studying them since she was young. She used to always read tomes and books from long dead lords to learn new things, my brother was afraid she was going down a dark path. He and I didn’t intervene but we watched and made sure she stayed safe, she may have been my bigger sister but when it came to the dead, she had a tendency to get in over her head.

My brother, I mentioned him above, he was incredible. The type of brother any sister would dream of having, kind but stern. He’d driven off a few suitors who had come to try and take either my sister or I, claiming that marrying for money or prestige is not to marry but to be enslaved. His name was Geran and he was better with the sword than any of those nay-saying knights. He taught me everything I knew about swordsmanship and how to survive.

Then, my idyllic life was shattered with the sound of fire and the smell of blood. Geran and I had been practicing swordsmanship, learning more complex maneuvers and I was even besting him in some of the throws. That’s when the explosion happened, the keep took but the walls shook, the chandelier above us snapping and nearly crushing both me and my brother. We smelt the smoke from above and through the glass windows could see fire coming from one of the upper levels, near my sister’s room.

I’ve never ran so fast in my life, the stairs seemed to blur underneath my quick feet with my brother close in toe. When I reached her door I found it locked and heard a sharp ”Move!” Just as my hands left the door, my brother’s strong foot connected with the left central part of the door, where the hinges were. The door flew off like it were simple wood instead of white oak that all of our doors were built out of, and the sight we saw next made me want to weep.

Within my sister’s room stood a Baal-Rog, I remembered reading about them in her tomes. It stood over thirteen feet and had to hunch over to stand in the room. It’s right hand was gripped firmly around the neck of my sister and it spoke in dragon tongue. “Did you think there would not be consequences, human? Now your home will burn and you will watch as I carve out their hearts.” The beast said coldly, its voice still haunts me to this day.

My brother wasted not another second and charged the beast with his sword drawn and slashed at its lower stomach. There was the sharpest of shrieks of pain as the beast dropped my sister and began to claw at my brother. His skill had me frozen, I was seeing moves I had never seen him do before… Then I heard a shriek from my left and down the hall stood several demon-kin. My face turned cold as I readied my blade. These creatures were nothing to the Baal-Rog my brother was dueling and I needed to defeat these beasts to help him, so I did. One hack, two slash and three cuts were down, I rushed back to the room to find it empty save a man.

I hadn’t been gone but three minutes but my brother, sister and the beast was gone. Standing there was a man with blood on his face and the scattered remains of several demons. He looked up to me and walked over, his eyes turned caring for the shortest of seconds as I croaked. I tried to ask where my siblings were but he just shook his head and pointed at the shattered window. Tears, for the first time in my life began to stream down my cheeks as he wiped them away. Then he said the words that changed my life forever ”I can train you on how to kill them. Vengeance can then be yours.” And I never looked back, my singular goal in life now was to hunt down that Baal-org and rid it of its cursed life.
