Merlin Class Hyperthrusters were designed with Marines in mind, and are versatile multi-role craft. These light and fast stealth craft can drop into hostile locations, strike with precision, and escape quickly before an alarm has been raised. These craft are also outfitted with an external cargo dock, for extra storage on long missions and for the boarding of vessels. Enough room sits just under this for a pair of power armor and long arms or other potential load-outs to suit the strike team. A combination of maneuvering jets also gives the craft VTOL capabilities in atmosphere, allowing it to act as either a fighter jet or support VTOL.

The back-to-back, two seat craft lacks the A.D.F.'s usual modular design. However, to make up for this deficiency, the craft has an external docking collar integrated into the dorsal section of the fuselage which allows for it to equip modules external to the craft (commonly referred to as mission pods) for use in space. Inside an atmosphere, the attachment of such a pod imposes a -50% penalty to piloting the craft, so most sane pilots are extremely reluctant to take an attached pod into an atmosphere. The rear-facing passenger controls all mission pod systems, and also controls the attachment/detachment mechanisms for the external docking collar. The following is a brief list of the most common mission pods used:
    • Scientific Sensor Array (for reconnaissance missions)
    • Military Sensor Array (to coordinate strike teams)
    • Magnetic Tow Drives (for covert satellite placement)
