Born in one of the poorest sections of Detroit, Jesse Stokes was the sixth child born to a "Sanitation Engineer" father and a stay at home mother. With three brothers and two sisters, Jesse's parents didn't have a lot of time for one-on-one interaction. Being the youngest, it was basically left to the older siblings to care for him and keep him entertained so his parents could have what little peace they could get in their hectic life.

By the time he was twelve years old, Jesse was already as big as most sixteen year old boys. When he finally hit his big growth spurt, people started taking notice. Other parents complained about his size when he went out for high school sports, saying he had to be older than his birth certificate said, or that he must be a mutant to be as large and as strong as he was. Nonetheless, he excelled at the various sports he tried, and devoted almost every waking hour to training and conditioning. Several colleges recruited him, but he felt college just wasn't the life for him. He wanted something with more structure, more discipline. So, shortly after his seventeenth birthday, he found himself staring at the local USMC recruiting office. Making a snap decision, he turned the knob and walked into the office.

Two days after his eighteenth birthday, Jesse found himself in line with thirty other young men, watching as those in front of him took their turns in the barber chair. The drill sergeant, stalking up and down the line and getting in the face of anyone who dared make eye contact, finally reached the end of the line and stared up at Jesse. "Holy hell! You are a big one! What the hell did your mama feed you? Elephants?" Knowing it was a rhetorical question, Jesse wisely kept his mouth shut and eyes front. After that, boot camp was extremely easy, the only difficulties being weapons training, where finding weapons with trigger guards large enough to accommodate his overly-large fingers was a bit of a problem. Hand to hand combat was his favorite, where he combined his high school sports techniques with good old Marine Corps training.

Over the next ten years, Jesse found his niche in the Corps as an MP, where his size was a huge asset in ending the drunken brawls that usually ensued at any of the local 'recreational establishments' every weekend. Recognizing his potential, his commanding officer called him in one day, saying "Master Sergeant, I can't make you do this, but I would highly recommend you take this advice. There will be someone here tomorrow morning, 0800 sharp. He is looking for someone highly motivated and willing to accept dangerous assignments. He is an old friend of mine, and I would suggest you listen to his proposition. That is all I can say, but if I were you, I would take this opportunity."

Next morning, Jesse showed up at the briefing room, expecting to see other members of the Corps waiting to hear the proposition. Seeing only a single man, dressed in a stylish suit, he hesitated before clearing his throat and saying "Pardon me, sir. Colonel Jeffries said that...." Lifting a hand to stop him, the stranger said "You are in the right place, Mr. Stokes. Have a seat."

Flipping through the files in front of him, the stranger ran down a list of Jesse's accomplishments and commendations. Then, closing the folder, he looked at Jesse and said "I am here to offer you an opportunity, Mr. Stokes. I assume you have heard about the rash of mutant and other super-beings running rampant in Century Station? Good, glad to hear you keep abreast of current events. I represent a government organization tasked with the control of these beings. There is a group of individuals working within the city semi-clandestinely. They, too, are doing their best to control those beings who choose to use their powers to the detriment of society. I am offering you a position within this organization. I will need an answer before you leave this room. If you say yes, you will immediately be discharged from the Corps, and transported to Century Station where you will meet up with the Director of this band of heroes. All your personal effects will be delivered to you upon your establishment of residence in Century Station. If you say no, you will not be contacted again, and this meeting never happened. I will give you ten minutes to make your decision."

Sitting quietly for a couple of minutes, Jesse appeared to be lost in thought before a smile cracked his military demeanor. "Sir, that sounds like more fun than tossing around some drunks every weekend. Where do I sign?"

Less than twenty four hours later, Jesse found himself on a flight to Century Station, carrying nothing but a duffel bag full of clothes, hoping he would finally be able to put his great strength and fighting skills to some real use.
