Sovereign's Background

Background Story

Reason for Being on Earth: Nathaniel has lost his purpose and misses the multitude of mortals he has met, befriended, loved and lost as he has outlived them all. He has seen plagues, wars, and inhumanity to man that has made him jaded and disillusioned with people and human society.

Familiarity with Our World: Has studied the Earth extensively and is very knowledgeable about the world and its people, cultures, customs, laws, basic history and technology.

My Humble Origins
I was born Nathaniel Hart, in 1750 in a dutifully-maintained New Jersey farmhouse to two loving parents of modest means and great personal conviction. My father was John Hart, and my doting mother was Deborah Scudder of the Scudder family of Shudder's Falls. We grew up working hard for everything. Of the few luxuries I enjoyed growing up, I miss the love of my parents the most. My brothers and I fought and scrapped and competed for every article of clothing, every kill we made on the hunt, and for the favor of our father. Life in New Jersey in those days was hard, but a big family, friendly relations with the few remaining Unami tribesmen who had chosen to westernize and remain in the area, faith in God, and hard work made everything worth while.

The Revolutionary War
By the time my countrymen in Massachusetts had begun a shooting war with the British, I was married and my wife, Sandra, was expecting our first-born. My father, John Hart, did his part as a patriot and stood fast against the tyranny of the monarch. A few days after the first shots were fired in Lexington, I had set my affairs straight and traveled to join General Washington. My father was a simple farmer and a good and decent man who did his best to give voice to the concerns of our neighboring communities, but he was far too old by this time to personally take up arms, and so I convinced him through my enlistment to be prudent and look after our extended family in New Jersey.

War is a damn, bloody mess. I won't write here about my moments of fear, doubt, and shame on the battlefield. Despite my apparent immortality I am as human as anyone who might one day read this. Nor was I much of a hero. I do take pride in one thing I did during the war. I took a bullet for General Lafayette. I saw the English marksman in the treeline and quickly reasoned what his intentions were. I was always a nimble lad, and when I saw what was about to happen I leapt up and knocked the general from his horse. My countrymen cut the Englishman in half with their volleyed musket-fire, and I helped the general up before he took me for a traitor and ran me through with his cutlass. That was when it happened. After thanking me, his face went momentarily slack and he ordered me to sit down. I had been shot clean through my liver. I followed his eyes down and saw the tear in my rather unkempt uniform. There was a hole wider than my thumb that went clean through me. The general was so overcome that he momentarily lapsed into French and...well, that's when he bequeathed to me Brown Bess. Anyway, I learned during the war for our independence that army life just wasn't for me. I can't say as that was the last time I fought on bloodied ground, but it was certainly the last time I voluntarily signed-up to do so. Anyway, that was a troublesome time, I did my part, discovered that what killed normal men didn't kill me, and stopped aging.

Sandra died just after the turn of the century from a cancer of the breast. She was a fine woman, attentive mother, and a dutiful wife.

The Civil War
I fought on the side of the union despite old Abe's often and repeated violations of the Constitution. The big thinkers of that time repeated the same refrain north of the Mason-Dixon line: the Constitution isn't a suicide pact. Yeah, that's what they said to justify making people political prisoners and sorts of other rubbish. Me, I served in the Navy. After my experiences during the revolution, I wanted no part of another ground war. Damn good thing, too...a number of my mates from that period lost limbs and both of my last grandsons got themselves killed. When I received word during our blockade of New Orleans, I decided then and there to never again have children.

World War I
Woodrow Wilson was a right bastard. There was no silver lining to this period of my life save that it ended up dumping me in Europe: my first venture overseas. There wasn't much to see after the war that wasn't death, disease, or destruction but I stayed behind anyway and helped out by driving ambulances for the Red Cross and doing extensive manual labor to help clear the destruction.

Did I mention Woodrow Wilson was a bastard? Yeah, his efforts in France during Armistice sowed the seeds for even greater misery.

World War 2
More to come later...
