Background Story

Benjamin's family had long been people of the woods reaching back to before the coming of the RIFTs as legend has it. He would sit and listen to the stories his grandfather said was told to him by his grandfathers, grandfather. It told the tale of how in those early days Benjamin's family began to look for safe haven to grow a new life for themselves, and of the other families that they helped along the way. Ranging out for miles into now hostile lands looking for anything that could be salvaged and growing a new community. They taught the skills the people needed, protected them, and scouted the area around their new town often. Eventually the ranks would grow and those who took to scouting, protecting and scavenging for supplies took on the name RANGER. Over the years the name fell off and the people proceeded on, but Benjamin's family kept to the same ideals and passed them on. Eventually only the members of his family bore the tattoo that said RANGER.

Now Benjamin had received the tattoo on his right bicep in the family tradition and this was one of his proudest moments, it was an acknowledgement of his completed training enough to go out on his own for the first time. His father reached into a chest and removed two objects one a knife with the word Kabar etched into the blade just above the handle, the second an old bolt action hunting rifle. "My son the time has come to pass these down to you, go out and scout the northern region. Move without being seen and report back your findings in three days." With a nod Benjamin went out to do as instructed, he knew this task would determine how he was viewed in the family as there was always a predetermined set of objects to find and survival skills to use. So for three days Benjamin lived off the land and found and noted his objectives, as he returned to his home he could see the dark columns of smoke rising into the sky.

Checking that he had his fighting knife and rifle ready he remembered the tales told of how the knife had passed from generation to generation in his family and each time the one in possession who took it off to war came home alive and many times barely a scratch on them. Now he look ahead back towards his village and moved in closer. As he got closer he slowed his pace and approached slowly in a circular pattern getting closer. Once inside the village he found his worst nightmare to have been realized. The village decimated, bodies everywhere and most everything had been looted and taken. One man remained loading the last of his ill gotten gains. Benjamin knew he had yet to be spotted as there was no helmet on the man.

Taking aim with the rifle he attempted to line up the only shot he would have. Slowing his breathing he thought of everything he had been taught, and gently began to squeeze the trigger. Just before the shot rang out the man slipped and the bullet grazed his right temple. Benjamin knew he had to move quickly grabbing the knife off his belt he raced into close range. His heart beating fast and his target still stunned by the experience he soon pounced on his prey. Moving to roll him he was caught off guard and knocked to the ground. Both men punched each other in the face several times. Looking left Benjamin saw the Kabar on the ground and stretched out to grab it.

Aiming for the only place he had the chance of hitting he jammed the knife right into the mans neck and twisted before yanking it back out. The spray of blood from the force of it all left the man dead in a matter of moments as the color drained from his face. Push his prey off him Benjamin laid there briefly before coming to his senses and wiping off the knife he put it on his utility belt and realized if not for it he would surely be dead.

In the aftermath of it all, Benjamin began to look around to gather anything he could that would lead him to those responsible for this act. In his fathers chest was a dagger marked "Poznan". This would be the only credible lead he would walk away with. Burying every body he could find he buried his father and grandfather last. Using the knife given to him by his family he placed a slice in his hand. As the dark red blood began to pool in his palm he kneeled between the graves and let his blood drip onto the dirt covering the two men who taught him so much. "I swear on the honor of the family I will avenge you both."

What was left wasn't much Savannah and Max were in their usual resting locations. Calmly he approached Savannah and kept her calm talking to her and letting her know all would be alright, and Max approached with his usual friendly nature to Benjamin's general presence. Once he was certain both were okay to leave generally alone he began to look at what was left. The one thing that had been certain the rules about having an emergency cache of supplies came in handy. Taking the few things he had managed to store he gathered and checked. Satisfied that they were still in good order he geared up and returned to his horse. Placing the saddle on Savannah he set off to track down those responsible and motioning to Max they set off in the direction of Merc Town on what was sure to be a trip lasting several days.

Stopping around the middle to later portions of each day Benjamin would hunt and cook a meal to share with Max while Savannah grazed nearby each time. At night Benjamin would rest lightly while Max kept primary watch between short bursts of sleep. After a week they were close and would be in town within a day at most. The journey itself was uneventful and getting through the gate and into town was only slightly annoyed by having to place all his psychic information into a file. Once through the gate he proceeded to look for any information he could find. His search led him to a man named Wihelm Kraus. Kraus' information pointed him across the ocean to Europe. 'Well looks like I'll get to use my language skills for a change', he thought to himself.

After getting information about a job and transportation to Europe he considered his options. He could work the job and try to pick up the trail once there. As the journey began he remembered the tales his father told of Europe and the language skills he passed along. 'Well dad looks like you have helped me once again'. Many months later as he was traveling Europe and working on the contract he began to doubt the information, and as he ran low on credits he began to wonder if he'd ever get home.
