Interest in Rifts: Orbit

Greetings all,

I was wondering if there was enough interest to bring back the Rifts Orbit game

If so, I'd be GMing it as bit more hard SciFi than a traditional Rifts or Phase World. Dealing with the rigors of relatively slow space flight, weightlessness and the harshness of trying to make a living in the void.

I've got a pretty good idea on how I want to open the game and if I can get some interest going, I'll work out a bigger story arc.

So if you have any questions comments or interest, give me a post here and lets see what happens.

I'd be interested for sure. I still have a lot of fondness for the original game and my favorite character is from that dimension. Fausto, the Psyslingin' Mutant Mongoose with a lisp!

My first idea is for a freelance crew that can move around the system doing this and that. Earning credits and trying to stay alive.
Think Cowboy Beebop, Firefly or even Merctown-Space depending on the groups overall alignment.

I've got a good idea how I want to do the intro and some tickles in my brain for a longer run story arc. I'm waiting on access to the EU source material, so this may change as I read up on that.

For those that are interested, post in and be heard. I'm willing to make changes to give you a story you want to be a part of.

Fausto was awesome. Kiska liked him - as much as she liked anyone :D. Those it was our hulking House Cat turned bounty hunter that I loved the most - especially as he faced off against the really short juicer.

Edit: I am interested, but the commitment of time is one I have to weigh heavily.

Sadly, I'm in the same boat at least for the time being. But I'm sure it'll make interesting reading, so I'd be looking forward to that at least. :D

    He will also instantly know what general direction the rift is located and whether the rift is big or small.
    Note: This sensing ability specifically relates to dimensional portals/rifts and not ley nexuses and ley lines.

Dimension Sense - 49% (+5%)
    Concentrate for 1d6+2 mins to know: type of dimension, if it supports human life, its magic Level, how it was created, if it will close soon, its frequency of opening, any dimensional monsters nearby or in portal (-10% skill), plus unusual characteristics, just by reading portal or meditating after stepping thru

    Success ratio 34% +5% if done as ritual gives +20% success

    If fail but within 20% will contact correct location but not necessarily the right target
    Send familiar - must return in time or trapped until a portal can be opened (x1 per 24 hrs)

    Mentally and physically linked with familiar
    Familiar is linked to the shifter and obeys his every command, verbal and mental.
    If the familiar is killed, the shifter will permanently lose 10 hit points; see description for full consequences.

Summoning
    Battle of wills - roll above my MA +ME bonus; 3 out of 5x (if fail is subservient)
    If save - roll init....if I win close rift / if fail creature appears and might attack
    If beat creature - use pact
    If lose to creature - the shifter might be attacked or the being escapes
    Max # of Minions: 2 lesser (4 sub demons) - sub demons or imp-like minor being, poltergeists or haunting entity = 1 lesser/2 lesser beings = 1 greater

The most permissive mention of Magic in the book is under Outcast Station: Magic is NOT generally known. This is more permissive than Magic is NOT known. :P

The article in Rifter 56 doesn't really cover this to my reading. But I only skimmed it recently (I read it in depth when it came out).

That said, when Drew was running the game, he had this for allowed Magic OCCs:
Referring to the Sino-Japanese Graveyard: If these dangers weren’t bad enough there are supposedly aliens, monsters, and strange phenomena that occur here. The Scientists of Laika station have discovered that the station actually sits in a space version of a Blue Nexus, or where several Blue zones meet. There is always a Laika shuttle near the Graveyard collecting data, but they rarely communicate with others and are vary unlikely to assist anyone in danger.

I'm still doing some research but any magic will be severely limited. Possible just to the Mystic OCC

Also Dbees would be extremely rare, possibly to just 1-3 clans/races.

Okay, back from vacation.
I didn't get any of the reading done that I had planned but while I was away, Tiree fixed my account so I can see the old Orbits threads.


So we have some interest.
What kind of group sounds better; Freebooter or based out of one of the main stations, possibly military?

Any other votes for a different group type? Or is Freebooter the consensus?

If your interested in another character for this game, check out my Techno-Wizard Jenny Jefferies. She's an experienced character and I've been looking for the right home for her.

And I have the appropriate unlocks purchased to allow my Amercian characters to visit other regions.

I don't want to lose my characters accumulated material possessions (I paid a whole bunch of EP to keep those possessions) so that's my one hangup.
